Book Review: Cronin’s Key
Cronin’s Key
by N.R. Walker
Blurb: NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec’s view on weird is changed forever.
Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last thousand years waiting for Alec. He’d been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn’t expect him to be human, and he certainly didn’t expect that shield to be a police badge.
Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.
Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.
Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn’t always what it seems.
Review: As I read Cronin’s Key, I thought how weird it was for Alec to find himself drawn to a vampire even if Alec was accustomed to weird. It seemed almost surreal that a human would have such an attraction. Was it the fact that Cronin was a Vampire? Was it physical alone, or was there something more? What did it mean for a vampire to be fated and were humans fated as well?
Walker creating stress and tension both in Alec and Cronin by thrusting Alec into the Vampire world and putting him at odds with his humanity and his human world. It further caused Cronin to question what he knew and thought about being fated. How could he be fated to a human? It had never happened to a vampire before. So why had it happened now and why to him?
Walker is an artist pulling together the colors, sounds, and smells of both worlds as they clashed. She drew me in as she drew Alec into Cronin’s world, his friends, their vampire lives, and the chaos that his world was now thrust into.
What was Alec’s role in this chaos? Was he more than a vampire’s fated one? What was the key? Was Alec someone special and if so how?
Walker tugged at my curiosity as she led me through the myriad twists and turns in this love-filled romance thriller. I’m looking forward to Cronin’s Key II and will report on that book as soon as I have read it.
