Morgan Drake is the only witness to a murder in an alleyway. Nik Valentinov works for Sanctuary, a foundation offering witness protection to anyone whose safety is compromised. Morgan discovers a bodyguard’s arms can offer more than protection.
Morgan Drake witnesses a murder in an alleyway. He is the only person who can give evidence in prosecuting the cop responsible for the crime. When the FBI safe house where he’s being held is compromised, he follows the instructions of the agent in charge and runs.
Nik Valentinov works for Sanctuary, a foundation that offers witness protection when FBI security is questionable.
When Morgan’s handler sends him to Nik for safety, neither Morgan nor Nik could imagine that two weeks alone in a cabin in the woods would have their hearts racing with something much more than merely trying to keep Morgan alive.
Review: Twenty, one sixty-six, Altamont, western, black cat, lemon pie, words that he was told to commit to memory. “Remember them and follow instructions if anything happens to me.” Thus began Morgan Drake’s quest for protection – Sanctuary.
Morgan was tense. He had witnessed a murder of an innocent girl in the alley behind his home, and the safe house he was holed up in had been compromised. Two men down, one his guard, the other, the person sent to kill him. Morgan was scared.
When the FBI can’t protect a witness, or chooses not to, Sanctuary, a privately funded organization will. Founded by an ex-FBI agent, Sanctuary became Morgan’s lifeline – literally. He had to get to the Sanctuary safe house, a safe house that would keep him alive long enough to testify, one that would not be compromised.
Nik, Nickolai Valentinov, was a big man, blond hair just as he was told, Russian, scary, dangerous. Morgan had no choice, either trust him or risk his own death. He chose the first. When two men are confined to a cabin in the woods for two weeks the outcome could be disastrous. Tempers flair, restlessness consumes Morgan. He was not used to sitting around, neither was Nik, but at least Nik had done this before.
Nik didn’t talk much. Taylor his first protector did. Nik was all business, no fun, no games, no possibility of anything but protection. But even hard assed Nik had to bend a rule when Morgan insisted he needed some exercise. The cold lake behind the cabin was perfect for swimming, Morgan’s preferred form of exercise. When Morgan stripped to his boxer briefs and dove into the water, Nik had all he could do to hold back his lust, but he couldn’t compromise his client. No, that would go against everything he trained for. His job came first, sex, relationship, love was not permitted in his self imposed grand scheme of things.
Sanctuary was his life, his first love, his own moral code of ethics. Even if Morgan started flirting, Nik had to control his desires. But once Morgan got under a corner of that hard shell, Nik had no choice.
R.J. Scott weaves suspense, fear, and romance into a great read. Once I started reading Guarding Morgan, I was hooked. It was a fast moving book that kept my attention from the first page to the last. Give it a try!
