Butterflies Abound
I’ve always loved the splendor of the Butterfly. During its short life the Butterfly exhibits beauty and grace as it moves along in the breezes. My Butterfly bush has become a haven for hundreds of Butterflies during the summer months. While there are several varieties of Butterfly, most common visitors to my bush are the Monarch.
When you go out my front door, you are often amidst wave after wave of those beautiful creatures as they fly around from flower to flower. Butterflies abound. Often the winds take them aloft, but they always return to feast on the nectar offered them.
As a friend and I were chatting about the life of the Monarch Butterfly it dawned on me that we, in the GLBT community, are somewhat similar to the butterfly. We go through a metamorphosis as we begin to realize what we are and how we differ from the others around us. We, too, change into beautiful creatures, not unlike the Monarch Butterfly. As we spread our wings, we begin to partake in the nectar and splendor offered us. Many of us grow into nurturing creatures in our own right. Others simply blend in with the community around them.
Unlike the Butterfly, our lives are considerably longer with lots of twists and turns. We learn who our friends are and we gain new insights into life. We often feel that we don’t fit and sometimes we are right. But, like the butterfly, we like the nectar offered and fly back to savor it.
