Today we are chatting with Matthew Kailen from the John Charles best seller Love On Life Support. As some of you know, Matthew is a respected paramedic in the Amity Fire Department. His life certainly has been interesting.
Thanks for joining us today. Let me start with a question I’m sure is utmost in our reader’s minds. Why a paramedic?
Like some youngsters, I always wanted to be a fireman. I had seen the department in action and thought it was the greatest job on earth. As I grew into my teens, I realized that I had a skill for helping people and really enjoyed the medical field.
But why a paramedic and not study to be a doctor?
I wanted both worlds. If I trained to be a doctor I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to work in fire and rescue. By studying to be a paramedic I got the best of both worlds.
You’ve seen some horrific situations in your job. How do you cope?
That was one of the hardest things to learn. At first I took every case home with me. But I soon learned that the stress of the job was a killer. My partner Pat, showed me how to let the job be finished at the end of the shift. It was hard but I did learn.
Your father was a tough man. Many would say he was more of a drill sergeant than a father.
I don’t agree with that analogy. A drill sergeant has a heart. He loves you and wants you to succeed. My father had neither a heart nor the desire for us to do well. He treated everyone as if they were scum, even my mother.
So why did she stay with him? Certainly she could have gotten a divorce.
She stayed for us. Mike threatened to hurt us if she even hinted of divorce. She was trapped.
Difficult question from our readers. You were a first responder on the scene of your sister’s car accident. What went through your mind when you found out it was Meredith and Alan in the car?
Matthew sat in silence for a minute before answering.
I had no idea who was in the car, but I knew whoever it was, they were badly hurt. The car was a mangled mess of metal. The occupants could not have survived that much trauma.
Once I realized it was Alan and Meredith, I went into overdrive to get them out. I know adrenaline pumps though our systems in situations like this, but my body must have pumped even more into me. I was determined to get her out and make sure she was okay.
We know that didn’t end well. I can say for our readers and myself we feel you loss.
Thank you.
When you discovered that your high school friend Trent was working at Amity E.R. you seemed to make it difficult for him. Why?
By that point, I had adopted my niece and nephew. They were my life blood and I didn’t want anyone to hurt them.
You dated for a while. Why did you stop?
I found out the hard way that a guy with two kids was not wanted in the dating scene. Once it was suggested that I give my kids to Grace to raise so the guy I was dating didn’t have to be bothered with them.
Really? He actually said you should give your kids away?
Yes, and he was most sincere about it. He felt kids were not necessary and that Grace could do a better job raising them then I could. Needless to say, he was gone before the evening finished.
By why the no dating rule? Couldn’t you date and see what was out there?
By then I had dated and it left a sour taste in my mouth. So I had hook-ups now and then just to get off, but swore I’d not date anymore.
But Trent got to you?
Yeah, just say it was his persistence and charm that caused me to break my rules. Actually he made me break the second rule too. No dating people I worked with. That could have ended really bad for both of us.
Your father didn’t like that the adoption was approved?
No, he didn’t. He swore that he would get the kids away from me. He told the court that no fag was going to raise his grandkids. He made my life miserable as a youngster in his house and made it even worse as I grew into adulthood. But this was his worst.
We all know how that ended. How is your life now and what’s next with Trent?
My life is so much better now. My kids aren’t afraid to be out in public anymore. And as for Trent, I’m not giving away and spoilers. You’ll just have to wait and see for yourself.
Wow, that’s mean! (Laughing) Our readers and I thank you for spending some time with us. May we ask you to come back sometime, possibly with Trent?
Thanks for having me here today. I’ll ask Trent if he wants to talk with you. Knowing him and his outgoing personality, I’m sure he would enjoy it.
