Review: Ground Zero by Aimee Nicole Walker
Title: Ground Zero
Author: Aimee Nicole Walker
Series: Zero Hour – Book One
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Blurb: Ground zero, noun: the center or origin of rapid, intense, or violent activity or change.
Heat, humidity, and homicide are things veteran detective Sawyer Key expects to encounter on his first day with the Savannah Police Department, but the hostile reception from his new partner catches him by surprise. Sawyer isn’t a stranger to heartache and recognizes that Royce Locke is a wounded man who’s reeling from a devastating loss. Relentless and patient in all things, Sawyer is determined to make the new partnership work.
Savannah, Georgia is known for her quirky people, oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and antebellum architecture. Beneath the Southern charm and hospitality, festering hatred and violence is soaring with the summer temperatures. Locke and Key find themselves at the epicenter when their first case involves the death of a former shock jock who appears to be the victim of vigilante justice.
Opposites in nearly every way, the two detectives set aside their differences to take back their city and restore law and order. From this reluctant truce, an intense attraction grows that will either tighten or shatter their tenuous bond. Falling for his partner spells inevitable disaster, but Sawyer’s always been a sucker for wounded things. Sawyer could be the key to the life Royce has always wanted, if he’s brave enough to trust him. The fuse is lit, the clock is running, and the zero hour is upon them. Tick tock.
Ground Zero is the first book in the Zero Hour series, which follows Locke and Key’s investigations and evolving relationship. Ground Zero has a happy-for-now ending with no cliffhanger. It contains mature language and sexual content intended for adults 18 and older.

Review: Two veteran cops. Two men with history. Two people who are suffering from personal pain. Thrust together by forces not their own.
What do you do, when on your first day, your new partner tells you
Locke swallowed hard, and Sawyer thought his partner had said all he planned to until he cleared his throat and spoke again. “I need for you to understand the way I’m treating you has nothing to do with you. I didn’t want a new partner; I will never want a different partner than Marcus. I might always resent your presence in my life. I won’t invite you over for cookouts, and I won’t accept an offer from you if you were to extend one. I don’t want to know your favorite food, music, books, or movies. I do not want to be your friend today, tomorrow, or maybe even ever. You don’t deserve this, and I’m sorry, Key.”
Breathe in. Hold. Release. What else could he do?
Sawyer Key had been transferred to the Savannah Police Department and had been assigned to replace Royce Locke’s deceased partner. No one ever wanted to replace a deceased cop, especially one who had been partnered to the same person for over a decade. Sawyer knew the drill. Stay alert, mind his own business, and try to get along. But how do you get along with an arrogant prick who not only doesn’t want you as his partner, but who had pissed off almost the entire police department?
Breathe in. Hold. Release.
Making matters worse was that Sawyer couldn’t stop noticing that Locke was a hunk, a hunk that would be in Sawyer’s bed almost immediately had they met under difference circumstances. They both knew the drill. Neither one wanted to be there, but they had a murder to solve. Sawyer Key was a professional and no matter how hard Locke pushed him away, he was determined to make it work. A temporary truce would allow them to try to find the person who brutally killed one of the countries most hated talk show hosts, but would they?
Filled with twists and turns, Ground Zero was more than I expected. I read the book in one sitting and wanted more even after reaching the last page. I’ve read and reviewed other books written by Aimee Nicole Walker and she always exceeds my expectations. Ground Zero is a great read, so give it a try.
