What does King Leonidas and his 300 men have to do with being gay in America?
What does King Leonidas and his 300 men have to do with being gay in America?
Consider the circumstances faced by Leonidas and his men and you will soon see the association.
In the times of Spartan Greece, all male children were trained as warriors from the age they could walk. The training was brutal and ferocious at best. Those children, who survived, grew into warriors like no others. Warriors who would sacrifice their lives for the cause without a second thought crossing their minds. Warriors who accepted only one thing – victory, nothing less.
Now I’m sure few, if any, gay men and women are willing to give up their lives for any cause.
They haven’t been trained as warriors since birth, nor have they been molded into total victory machines as King Leonidas’ men were back then. But, they’ve grown up in a society that has shunned them, tried to hold them down, and pushed them into corners and closets. As the Evangelical Christian movement tries to take hold in this country, the LGBT community finds itself being pushed deeper into that corner. If they have their say they all will be pushed so deeply into that closet that they’ll never be able to find the handle on the door.
300 Spartans fought to their deaths to prevent Xerxes and his huge Persian army from robbing them of their independence and democratic lifestyle. What are we doing to prevent us from losing our freedom and our lifestyle?
With the defeat of DOMA and California’s Proposition 13, the LGBT community is starting to be recognized as a powerful part of the world community. Keeping that image untarnished is necessary to continue to be accepted.
It is up to the GLBT community, at large, to unite and show the people of this country that you are a force to be reckoned with. How, you ask, can you be part of that without going to war and losing your life? Join a GLBT action group in your community, join Lamda Legal with your financial support, join your local Pflag group and help show the parents and friends of gay men and women who we are and what we stand for. Write to your state and federal representatives telling them who they work for and what you, as their constituents, want them to do while in office. Pass this blog along to others who will join in our crusade for equality.
If everyone of us simply does something, our voices will be heard! And eventually we, like King Leonidas and his men, will receive the backing necessary to gain our freedom and equal rights. Do Something!
